Ship Portrait of the Brigantine *Arvid - Kaptn. J.E. Hellgren 1883* - the sailing ship is shown at fair weather and under full sail off Holyhead and the South Stack Lighthouse, Anglesey heading for Brazil, with other sailing vessels in the distance - Oil on canvas, old relining - 50 by 75 cm (20 by 30 in), with frame 62 x 89 cm (24 1/2 x 35 in) - signed l. r. "W.H. Yorke, L`pool 1883" and inscribed with title - Private Collection, Northern Germany

Note: A characteristic ship portrait by this artist who loved so much to portray sailing vessels (instead of steamers) and executed in his best period (the 1880s). This painting was carefully cleaned and there is only little inpaint in the water at two areas and in front of the bow. Gladly this artwork has not suffered from Overcleaning - which can happen so easy with Yorke paintings because the color layers are thin - which you can see especially in the well preserved water, sky and in the details of the ships (rigging lines etc.). This is a Premium Artwork in good condition and ready to hang of cause. For information about Yorke see "Ship Portrait Artists" and other Literature.

Schiffswerft

Large Oilpainting of Troense Shipyard in the Svendborg-Sund, 1885, showing also a portrait of the sailing vessel "Anna", several men working on the right side at a hulk of a wooden sailing vessel, romantic early evening impression, on the left side another shipyard place, signed lower left with monogram E.G., Oil on canvas - 73 x 107 cm (28 3/4 x 42 inch) and with the frame 84 x 117 cm (33 x 46 inch), slight crackle, repair and inpaint in few places, cleaned and otherwise in good condition, gilted period frame - Private Collection, Halifax, NS (Canada)

Decorated Ostrich Egg

Ship Portrait of the British Steamer "Karamania", executed in Oil on an Ostrich Egg, South Africa ca. 1885-90, the egg mounted with a brass feet with leaf decoration and a final mount - Total height 36 cm (14 inch), Diameter of egg 14 cm (5 1/2 inch) - patina at egg and feet, at the (undecorated) back of the egg one older repair, cleaned and small loss of paint in the picture restored, in good condition, ready to display - Maritime Museum Collection, USA

Note: Available for our clients (only). The British steamship "Karamania" was built in 1883 by D. & W. Henderson in Glasgow, Scotland and owned by Barrow S.S. Co. in Barrow, UK. It was measured at 2045 tons and appears in Lloyds Shipping Registers (TM) from 1885 until 1900. Decorated Ostrich Eggs - originally decorated in the 19th Century with a ship portrait - appears quite rarely on the market. It appears that there was only one or a few artists only in Capetown, South Africa who used this medium. The execution of the painting is ok but does not show an academy or artist background, e.g. such as the Captain`s Cups (porcelain mugs with ship portraits) done in Germany. This can be more considered as a sort of Maritime Folk Art. Nevertheless it is from our opinion an unusual and interesting item for a marine or ship portrait collection, especially because a large number of 19th C. ships stopped at Capetown, but the Captains did rarely bring anything with them from this area. Note: This China Trade painting can clearly be attributed to Lai Fong, who worked from 1890 to 1910 in Calcutta. The Dowan Hill was built in 1893 and is flying the house flag of J.R. Dickson & Co. from Glasgow. Photo Copyright is with the FineArtEmporium.

Italian View

View of the Harbor of Civitavechia (Italy), mid 19th Century - with a Latin rigged sailing boat or ship at anchor, two men working in the foreground and a Fort in the background - Watercolor on paper, 17 x 23 cm (7 by 9 in), with the passepartout and frame 38 x 48 cm (15 by 19 in) - inscribed on the left "Civita Vechia" (in ink) - light age toning and few traces of dust, otherwise good to very good condition, framed in a new bird`s eye maple frame under glass - Private Collection New York City, USA

Note: We suppose this work has been executed from the style either by a French or German artist. In the 19th Century it was common for academy trained artists to visit Italy for studies. Anyway this is a rare motif since the harbour of Civitavechia was not often depicted in this period. Photo Copyright is with the FineArtEmporium.

R.A. Borstel Painting

Ship Portrait of the British full-rigged ship *Cressington* in the Pacific Ocean, ca. 1905 - the ship is shown on the high sea with the Australian coastline in the distance - Oil on board, 46 by 59 cm (18 by 23 1/2 inch), with frame 59 x 72 cm (23 by 28 1/2 inch) - inscribed on the bow with the ship`s name - cleaned, small repair in the sky, good condition, new varnish, period frame - Company Collection, Europe

Note: Although steamers were already used in this period for most maritime transports it was more economic to use for the trade to South America (West coast) and Australia sailing vessels. This period was the Golden Age of the so called "Windjammer" sailing ships. The Cressington is one of these large vessels and it can be supposed that it was used for the Wool Trade from Australia to Great Britain.

Early Ship`s Decanter

Rare to find: "Rodney" Cut Crystal Glass Ship`s Decanter, Regency Period (circa 1810-20), lead crystal with a large number of very fine executed and decorative cuts on the glass - Height 23 cm (9 inch), Diameter at the base 16.5 cm (6 1/2 inch) - good condition (slight wear and chips from use), with a round cut glass stopper in the same design - Private Collection Great Britain (UK)

Note: This early type of Ship`s Decanter was named after the British Admiral Rodney who won the battle of St. Vincent in 1780 and captured the Cape of Good Hope for the British Empire. With its broad base design it was built for use on board of a ship so it does not fall over when there was heavy waves moving the vessel. It was the Captains and Admirals of the Navy who mainly used them in their Salon to serve Portwine for guests or at the "Captain`s Table" in general.
Additional Note:
This is maybe one of the finest ways to serve a good port wine.
