Note: The Galeas *Betriebsamkeit* was first registered in Lubecka in 1805. When the vessel was built it could not be verified. The galeas was declared a total loss in 1826. A similar watercolor can be found in the Museum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte der Hansestadt Luebeck (Lubecka). The painter J.H.F. Meyer was a seafarer and helmsman on the *Betriebsamkeit* in 1816. Note: The Bark *Oeconomie* was built in Flensburg by the ship yard Knut Knudsen in Jürgensby for the shipping company R. Ingwersen and E. Jacobsen. Captain I. Nickelsen was born in Westerland on the Island of Sylt on 13th of October 1761 and died on the 17th of January 1835 in his hometown. Click on the image to enlarge the picture. Note: The Schooner *Otto* was built on the shipyard Otto Dolck in Altona for Hans Lange sen. in the year 1847. It had 123 GRT and could be identified by the ensign " Z 92". Note: A magnificent, lively and bright ship portrait by Holm, who worked usually together with Lorenz Petersen and later with his son Heinrich. The "Oder" was built 1851 for the HAPAG (Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt Aktien-Gesellschaft) and sold in 1868 to R.V. Beselin. One year later it was lost off Key West. It brought during their service a large number of European emigrants to the United States of America. Please refer to the page for P.C. Holm.

Note: The Brigg *Mathilde* was built in 1852 in Westervik (Sweden) and acquired in 1861 by the shipping company Joachim Reimers in Hamburg through the broker Brauss in Hamburg. The vessel made only one journey, Petersen´s journey to Rio Grande do S. from 1861-1864 was ill-fated and MATHILDE was lost at sea on Sept. 4th, 1864 off Tamsin (China). Note: The ensign of the vessel indicates it as belonging to Lower Saxony (British Flag with a Horse in the Center). In the year this picture was painted the North German Union was founded and the Vessels from Lower Saxony, Bremen, Hamburg, Altona, Prussia, Lubecka and Schleswig-Holstein used furtheron the new German flag (black-white-red). Note: Das erste Schiff des Hamburger Reeders Eduard Beatus Crasemann, die *Carlota*, wurde in Neuhof bei Hamburg von Ernst Dreyer erbaut. Kapitän T.S. Groot aus Westerland / Sylt führte den Segler 1859-62 nach Melbourne und Liverpool, 1862-63 nach Islay / Peru, Callao und Rotterdam. Die letzte Reise ging 1863 nach Singapur, Hong Kong und Akyab. In Hamburg zurück wurde die Bark am 19.9.1865 an Reeder Kirch in Altona verkauft. Die Nachkommen des Kapitäns T.S. Groot aus Keitum / Sylt veräußerten das auf dem Dachboden lagernde Gemälde 1975. Giovanni Luzzo (Italian, fl. 1851-77) - Ship Portrait of the German Schoonerbrig CATHARINA Capt. H. Dreier 1869 - inscribed with title: "Unter der Küste von Norwegen am 22ten März 1869 Schiff Catharina Capt. H.Dreier" - the vessel of Blankenese under reduced sails off the Norwegian coast – Watercolor – 41 x 61 cm (16 x 24 in.) – signed "Gio Luzzo Venice" and dated – The Werder Collection - Click on the image to see a larger photo

Note: The Catharina (168 GRT) was built on the shipyard of D.W.Kremer in Elmshorn for Thies Breckwoldt and Heinrich Dreyer in 1865. It was flying the flag "Z 102" or signal "LDVK". The captains Thies Breckwoldt, Heinrich Dreyer, Johs. Kröger and Johs. Bohn were in command. On the 2nd of November 1878 the Catharina left Antwerp and was bound for Rio Grande do Sul. It was Johs. Bohns first and only voyage on the Catharina. It is believed that the vessel sank in stormy seas between the 8th and 11th of November, some debris was washed ashore on the French coast near Ploumanache. Six members of the crew died at sea.
