Note: The *Mercur* was built in 1864 in Neustadt by J. Tornoe for the shipping company G. Jaede using a wooden construction with brass and iron bolts, no sheat metal. It had eight men crew and GRT 168,56. Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations.

The Barque Kriemhild was built 1884 by Germania for Matzen in Hamburg and sailed for this company until 1900. In German: Originales Schiffsportrait bzw. Kapitänsbild der Bark Kriemhild, die 1884 von der Schiffsbau Act. Ges. Germania für die Reederei C.M. Matzen in Hamburg gebaut wurde. Die Bark war dort von 1884 bis 1900 im Einsatz. Note: The *Nanny* was bought by shipping company J.W.Burmester in January 1885 in England. The Captains were A.P.H. Baethgen, C. Wilhelmi und B.H. Müller. The NANNY stranded off Santos on May 11th, 1890 and the wreck was sold soon after at auction, the crew was saved. Click on the image to enlarge the picture.

Note: The Barque *Bride* was bought by the Rostock shipping company Carl Rathens in the year 1887 in Sunderland (GB). Features: The Hull was covered in copper, 830(863) RGT, Signal MDNC. The following captains were in command of the ship: J. Müller from 1887 to 1889, Pagels from 89-91, Bliemester from 1891, the ship was sold to Norway the same year. Kapitänsbild P-Liner Pisagua Alfred Jensen

Large Ship Portrait of the *Hamburger Viermaster Pisagua - geführt von Capt. E. Bahlke* off a coastline 1893 - the four-masted Bark and Flying P-Liner is shown under full sail at sea with other shipping and a white cliffs headland on the right - Oil on canvas, 61 by 91 cm (24 by 36 inch), with frame 94 x 120 cm (37 by 47 inch) - signed lower left, inscribed with title and ship`s name also mentioned on the bow and in a flag - Private Collection

Note: The painting is housed in a monumental and partly real gilted gesso frame which is the original frame. This representative frame has small chips in a few places but is otherwise in good condition. The painting has been preserved in the family of Capt. Bahlke from 1893 until early 2007. It has never been cleaned or restored when being in the family and showed a thick layer of dirt and yellowed varnish as well as a small tear in the middle and inconsistence of paint in the lower right and upper left area. It has now carefully been cleaned and restored. This early P-Liner portrait can be considered as an unusual and remarkable well done work by the young Jensen. Note: The Hamburger Yachtclub was founded in 1892 and later became one of the most important sailing clubs in Northern Germany. It still exist today and has changed the name to Hamburger Segelclub. Note: The *Bruno & Marie* was built in 1861-62 in Altona by Dolck for the shipping company Schön, who sold the vessel in 1876 to the shipping company Willink & Co. in Hamburg. The Captains were 1876-77 C. Böge and 1877-80 E. H. A. Volkertsen of Langeness.

Note: A rather interesting background in a Mohrmann painting, which suggests, that the artist has visited the Cuxhaven area (mouth of the River Elbe in Northern Germany) previously. Click on the image to enlarge the picture.



Purvis Painting

Thomas G. Purvis (British, 1861-1933) - Ship Portrait of the German four-masted Bark *Wandsbek* in the Atlantic Sea ca. 1900 - the Windjammer is shown under reduced sails on the high Sea - signed lower left "T.G. Purvis, London" and inscribed in the center water section "Wandsbek" - Oil on canvas 40 by 60 cm (15 3/4 by 23 5/8 inch), with the frame 50 x 70 cm (19 3/4 by 27 1/2 inch) - period bird`s eye maple frame - good condition, usual age crackle, one repair at back, not relined - Private Collection New Jersey, USA

Note: A typical work by the artist with convincing dark-light contrasts and a liveful atmosphere. The *Wandsbek* (built 1892 in Liverpool) was one the fascinating Windjammers around the turn of the Century and in service for Philadelphia, Southern America, India and the South Sea. Ship Portrait

William Edgar (Australian, fl. 1898-1918) - Excellent Ship Portrait of the German Barque *Antuco* (of Hamburg) sailing to Australia, ca. 1900 - the vessel is shown under full sail at moderate sea off a Rock Headland with a light house and with two-masted vessel in the background - Oil on artist`s board - 48 by 62,5 cm (19 by 24 inch), with frame 62 x 76 cm (24 by 30 inch) - inscribed on the bow with the ship`s name and signed lower right "W. Edgar, Charlestown Studios, NSW - cleaned and in good condition - Private Collection, Memphis (TN), U.S.A.

Note: The large steel Barque "Antuco" (75 Meter Lenght, 1532 Tons) was built in 1892 by Blohm & Voss and owned by the Hamburg Shipping Company N.H.P. Schuldt. Captains in command were D. Thedens (1892), H.N. Spiess (1893-1900) and W. Kröger (1901-07). It was a highly appreciated ship by both the owners and captains & crew and many fast travels to Southern America and Australia were noted. In 1908 Antuco was sold to the Hamburg Shipping Company of 1896 and Capt. L. Müller was in command until 1912 when it was finally sold to Grimstad. T.G. Purvis ship portrait

Thomas G. Purvis (British, 1861-1933) - Ship Portrait of the German four-masted Barque *Gustav* at sea ca. 1910 - the large sailing ship is shown under full sail at moderate sea - Oil on board, 38 by 60 cm (15 by 24 inch), with frame 49 x 71 cm (19 by 28 inch) - signed lower left "T.G. Purvis" and inscribed on the bow with the ship`s name - cleaned, board is partly uneven due to age, in an old frame - Private Collection, Richmond, USA

Note: Purvis was a busy ship portrait artist, working in Cardiff, London and Bristol. He portrayed some of the largest sailing vessels which ever crossed the Oceans. Most of his paintings were executed between 1890 and the Great War (1914). This painting shows a realistic sea and a detailled handling of the huge Bark. Kapitänsbild Reimers

Heinrich Reimers (German, 1824-1895) - Ship Portrait of the German Steamer *Anton von Kiel - Capt. E. Aereboe* at sea off Hong Kong 1890 - the steamer is shown in the Chinese Sea with two junks in the background - Oil on canvas on original stretcher, 53 by 77 cm (21 by 30 inch), with frame 65 x 88 cm (25 1/2 by 34 1/2 inch) - signed "Heinrich Reimers", dated 1890 and inscribed with title as shown above - cleaned, smaller areas with repair / retouch only, in good condition, original frame - The Oporto Collection

Note: Reimers was a Captain and Pilot himself and worked in Kiel as a ship portrait artist. The steamer "Anton" was owned by the shipping company "Sartori & Berger" in Kiel and was obviously used for coastal trade in Far East. Note: The steamer *Lavinia* was built in 1887 on the shipyard of the Flensburger Schiffsbau-Gesellschaft for the shipping company A.Kirsten in Hamburg, using an iron construction. Note:
Thomas Willis was a contemporary of Antonio Jacobsen in New York (they did also co-operate occasionally). He is well known for his ship portraits of merchant shipping and yachts around the turn of the century and represented in several Maritime Museums in the USA. Click on photo to enlarge.

Note: From the house flag and funnel ensign we learn that this steamer belonged to the fleet of the Flensburg shipping company E. Schuldt, which is today located in Hamburg. Note: The steamer *Lemnos* was built in 1883 as PADANG in Middlesbroug / England using an iron construction., L 91,15m, W 11,27 m, D 7,18 m, 2191 GRT. Sold to the shipping company Kosmos, Hamburg June 26th 1896, sold to shipping company Laeisz March 5th 1898, sold to Deutsche Levante-Linie October 20th 1900. From 1896 to 1901 Captain P. Braren of Föhr was in command. The steamer sank after a collision in Dec. 1901 on the Elbe river. The Painting was formerly in the possession of family Braren of Föhr. Mohrmann painting

Note: The "Nal" was built in 1892 by Grangemouth Dockyard Co. in Alloa for J. Herron and Co. in Liverpool and originally named "Lord Ripon". In 1898 it was sold to the Rhederei Visurgis AG in Bremen and renamed "Nal". Finally in 1921 it was sold again to Danzig and sunk in January 1922 off Barnflet Island (near Cape Horn) in a gale. The "Nal" was mainly used for long distance transports, eg. to Chile, New Caledonia and the Delaware Bay.

Note: Der Dampfer *Termini* wurde 1906 in Ablasserdam von Smit für die Reederei Rob. M. Sloman jr. (Hamburg) erbaut. Neubau vom 12.3.1906. Länge 81,6 m, Breite 10,98 m, Tiefe 5,57 m, 1523 BRT, Dreifach-Expansions-Dampfmaschine, 1000 PS. Als Kapitän fuhren G. Müller von 1907/13 und G. Hansen bis zur Auslieferung 1920.
