China Trade Painting

Nam Cheong or Workshop (Chinese, fl. 1845-1870) - Ship Portrait of the British (or Canadian) barque *Crayfish* in the Chinese Sea, ca. 1868 - the barque is shown at sea near an Island and with a junk and paddle steamer in the far distance - Oil on canvas on original China Trade stretcher, 46 by 60 cm (18 by 23 5/8 inch), with frame 56 x 69 cm (22 by 27 inch) - inscribed on the bow with the ship`s name - light usual China Trade crackle (in the sea and hull), cleaned, only few areas with inpaint, good condition - Private Collection, Indianapolis, USA

Note: Nam Cheong worked in Whampoa, Hong Kong and rarely signed his works. This painting can be attributed to him or to a member of his workshop. It is executed on the typical thin canvas and in nearly original condition and without extensive crackle. It was previously framed and preserved under glass. Note: Alisa Craig is a familiar land mark often seen in paintings of the Clyde River School. The painting shows the vessel flying a Lovitt Shipping Company flag. There were several Lovitts who were ship owners in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in the 19th C. Their house flags varied from a red "L" to a blue "WDL" on white grounds. Without code flags or the name of the vessel on the bow, identification is difficult. There were three Lovitt Company barques in Greenock in 1868: the George Bell, the Francis Bourneuf and the Agnes M.Lovitt. Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations.

Note: This painting with the romantic atmosphere is a typical and well executed work from his Oeuvre with interesting sunset light effects on the water and on the starboard side of the Brig. It is possible that it shows an incident from the Danish-Prussian War in 1864, when the Danish forces fighted in the Northern Sea against the Prussian-Austrian fleet. Note: An early and very well done work by the famous French ship portrait artist with a romantic early evening impression. Paintings with a quality like this one were the reason why Adam Senior has been elected as official marine painter for the French government and why he is represented in the Musee de la Marine in Paris with a permanent exhibition. Note: Large size works by Yorke are overall quite rare and furthermore it was executed in his early years with great care and detail. This painting has been in the family of the Captain until it came into a North American Collection.



Edvard Skari painting

Edvard Skari - Shipping in the Oresund, Kronborg Castle beyond, ca. late 1870s or early 1880s, a full-rigged Ship is passing the Oresund and taking a pilot, many other sailing vessels in the background - signed lower right - Oil on canvas 60 x 95 cm (24 by 37 1/2 inch) without the frame - good condition (not relined, a few areas of repairs and inpaint, mainly in the sky) - Property of a European Collection

Note: The artist painted some versions with this motif. Another, larger example (80 by 126 cm and dated 1878) is in the Collection of the Norges Rederiforbund (described and illustrated under Nr. 22 in "Norsk Maritim Malerkunst" and in the Art Maritim Catalogue 2000) and the Norsk Sjofartsmuseum has as well a similar painting by Skari in their "Gram-Salen" on permanent exhibition. Pirate Sailing Lugger off Gibraltar

Spanish Artist FR - An Algerian Pirate Lugger is chased off Gibraltar, ca. 1880 - the three-masted Corsair Vessel is trying to escape from the British Naval Ship in the left background (which fires out of two cannons), on the right the Rock of Gibraltar - Oil on canvas, 66 by 94 cm (26 by 37 in), with frame 88 x 115 cm (34 5/8 by 45 in) - signed l.r. with monogram "FR" and anchor sign - cleaned, restored and in good condition, bright color, clearly visibel age craquelure throughout, in the (original) heavy mahogony frame - Private Collection Fenland, UK - Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations

Note: Many Pirates in Algier and Northern Africa were captured by American and European forces during the attacks in the 1830s (eg. USS Constitution was originally built for this purpose). Anyway and - according to reports from British Naval Officers - several Pirates / Corsairs were still active in the remaining part of the 19th Century and as late as until 1900. The Straits of Gibraltar at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea was a preferred place where they were seeking merchant ships from Europe and America to enter and capture ship and crew. British Naval Ships from Gibraltar were on duty to chase the Pirates.
