Image of Eduard Adam Ship Portrait

Edourd Adam. - Ship Portrait of the *Menai Straits off Cape de la Heve* 1878 – The British Bark under full sail passing Cape Heve (near Le Havre), a pilot boat arriving in the background – Oil on canvas – 62 x 92 cm (24 1/2 x 36 in.) – signed lower right "Ed Adam", dated "1878" and further inscribed "Havre" – good condition, not relined, one repair in the left sky section, slight inpaint, usual crackle, nice old gold frame

Note: An early and very well done work by the famous French ship portrait artist with a romantic early evening impression. Paintings with a quality like this one were the reason why Adam Senior has been elected as official marine painter for the French government and why he is represented in the Musee de la Marine in Paris with a permanent exhibition.

Presented by the FineArtEmporium in Hamburg.

Here is another photos of the painting, which shows better the romantic evening impression. On the main mast is shown the ensign of the shipping company while on the last mast the signs of the Marryot Code (for identification of the Ship) are visible:

The name of the vessel is shown twice on the bow as well as in the inscription in the center section below. This painting shows the typical style of the early and very desirable works by Adam Senior of the 1870s.
