Image of Buttersworth Painting

Thomas Buttersworth Sen. - The British Man-of-War St. George (Flaggship of Nelson) in a Gale 1808, the vessel is hit by a severe wave, inscribed and dated on reverse, Oil on board, ca. 25 x 38 cm, good condition, the possession of a Private Collector in Great Britain

Pirate Napoleonic Warse

Jens Iversen (1788-1855) attr. - Ship Portrait of the Privateer (Pirate) *Juliane Sophie of Copenhagen* chased by the British Brigg *Musqwetto* 1809 - the sloop is shown with three captured ships attacked by the Royal Navy Brigg off an Island - Gouache and Watercolor on paper, heightened with white, 22 by 36 cm (8 5/8 by 14 inch), with frame 47 x 56 cm (18 1/2 by 22 inch) - extensively inscribed with title (see below) and dated 1809 - tanned paper and ago signs otherwise ok - recent mounting and frame - Private Collection, Denmark

Note: The full inscription reads as following: "Privateren Juliane Sophie af Kiöbenhavn forfulgt med 3-de Priser af de engelske Slop of War Brig Musqwetto den 12. May 1809" - From the inscription and style we suppose this picture has been done by Jens Iversen (1788-1855), but there were several other artists active in this period. Note: Antoine Roux (pere) from Marseilles (Southern France) is a well known ship portrait artist who worked in Watercolor. Especially American Museums holds a large number of his works and there has been written extensively about him and his sons, who continued the workshop. Since he is so well known, there are appearing regularly fakes of his works on the market. Note: The wooden 197 ton Brig *Thomas Chalmers* was built in St Martins, New Brunswick, Canada in 1847 and registered at St John, New Brunswick on June 26th, 1847. It was sold to James Duncan of Dundee, Scotland and registered at Dundee in 1847. Pictures by this Riga based artist are quite rare and this is a nice example of his work. Note: The "Aganora" was built 1865 in Guernsey (Great Britain) and has been sold 1870 to the West Indies, so this painting must have been executed between 1865 and 1870. With the Attribution to the artist Frederik Tudgay the FineArtEmporium agree and follows a written statement previously given by Christies (TM) London some years ago. China Trade Painting

Nam Cheong or Workshop (Chinese, fl. 1845-1870) - Ship Portrait of the British (or Canadian) barque *Crayfish* in the Chinese Sea, ca. 1868 - the barque is shown at sea near an Island and with a junk and paddle steamer in the far distance - Oil on canvas on original China Trade stretcher, 46 by 60 cm (18 by 23 5/8 inch), with frame 56 x 69 cm (22 by 27 inch) - inscribed on the bow with the ship`s name - light usual China Trade crackle (in the sea and hull), cleaned, only few areas with inpaint, good condition - Private Collection, Indianapolis, USA

Note: Nam Cheong worked in Whampoa, Hong Kong and rarely signed his works. This painting can be attributed to him or to a member of his workshop. It is executed on the typical thin canvas and in nearly original condition and without extensive crackle. It was previously framed and preserved under glass. Note: Das erste Schiff des Hamburger Reeders Eduard Beatus Crasemann, die *Carlota*, wurde in Neuhof bei Hamburg von Ernst Dreyer erbaut. Kapitän T.S. Groot aus Westerland / Sylt führte den Segler 1859-62 nach Melbourne und Liverpool, 1862-63 nach Islay / Peru, Callao und Rotterdam. Die letzte Reise ging 1863 nach Singapur, Hong Kong und Akyab. In Hamburg zurück wurde die Bark am 19.9.1865 an Reeder Kirch in Altona verkauft. Die Nachkommen des Kapitäns T.S. Groot aus Keitum / Sylt veräußerten das auf dem Dachboden lagernde Gemälde 1975.
