Note: A rather interesting background in a Mohrmann painting, which suggests, that the artist has visited the Cuxhaven area (mouth of the River Elbe in Northern Germany) previously. Click on the image to enlarge the picture.

Ship Portrait

William Edgar (Australian, fl. 1898-1918) - Excellent Ship Portrait of the German Barque *Antuco* (of Hamburg) sailing to Australia, ca. 1900 - the vessel is shown under full sail at moderate sea off a Rock Headland with a light house and with two-masted vessel in the background - Oil on artist`s board - 48 by 62,5 cm (19 by 24 inch), with frame 62 x 76 cm (24 by 30 inch) - inscribed on the bow with the ship`s name and signed lower right "W. Edgar, Charlestown Studios, NSW - cleaned and in good condition - Private Collection, Memphis (TN), U.S.A.

Note: The large steel Barque "Antuco" (75 Meter Lenght, 1532 Tons) was built in 1892 by Blohm & Voss and owned by the Hamburg Shipping Company N.H.P. Schuldt. Captains in command were D. Thedens (1892), H.N. Spiess (1893-1900) and W. Kröger (1901-07). It was a highly appreciated ship by both the owners and captains & crew and many fast travels to Southern America and Australia were noted. In 1908 Antuco was sold to the Hamburg Shipping Company of 1896 and Capt. L. Müller was in command until 1912 when it was finally sold to Grimstad. R.A. Borstel Painting

Reginald Arthur Borstel (Australian, 1875-1922) - Ship Portrait of the British full-rigged ship *Cressington* in the Pacific Ocean, ca. 1905 - the ship is shown on the high sea with the Australian coastline in the distance - Oil on board, 46 by 59 cm (18 by 23 1/2 inch), with frame 59 x 72 cm (23 by 28 1/2 inch) - inscribed on the bow with the ship`s name - cleaned, small repair in the sky, good condition, new varnish, period frame - Company Collection, Europe

Note: Although steamers were already used in this period for most maritime transports it was more economic to use for the trade to South America (West coast) and Australia sailing vessels. This period was the Golden Age of the so called "Windjammer" sailing ships. The Cressington is one of these large vessels and it can be supposed that it was used for the Wool Trade from Australia to Great Britain. Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations

T.G. Purvis ship portrait

Thomas G. Purvis (British, 1861-1933) - Ship Portrait of the German four-masted Barque *Gustav* at sea ca. 1910 - the large sailing ship is shown under full sail at moderate sea - Oil on board, 38 by 60 cm (15 by 24 inch), with frame 49 x 71 cm (19 by 28 inch) - signed lower left "T.G. Purvis" and inscribed on the bow with the ship`s name - cleaned, board is partly uneven due to age, in an old frame - Private Collection, Richmond, USA

Note: Purvis was a busy ship portrait artist, working in Cardiff, London and Bristol. He portrayed some of the largest sailing vessels which ever crossed the Oceans. Most of his paintings were executed between 1890 and the Great War (1914). This painting shows a realistic sea and a detailled handling of the huge Bark. John Scott Painting

John Scott (British, 1802-1885) - Ship Portrait of a Russian Sail-and Steamship 1867 off Tynemouth, UK - in the background a sailing ship and the coastline of that area, numerous persons are visible on board of this steamship - signed and dated "J. Scott 1867" lower right - Oil on canvas, relined, good condition - ca. 67 x 107 cm (26 x 42 in) - in a 19th Century Lemon Gold frame - The Baltic Sea Collection

Note: The Ship is flying numerous ensigns and the Russian Merchant flagg has an additional Double-Eagle in the center. There is a name on the bow of the vessel (in kyrillic letters). Note: An impressive portrait of the large, threemasted steamship with an interesting background (Skagen is the place where the Northern Sea / Atlantic meets the Baltic Sea). This painting furthermore convinces with a realistic water, a detailled execution of the ship and interesting contrasts and colors in the sky (with a romantic touch). Note: The Screwsteamer "Plantyn" was built 1879 in Glasgow, Scotland by A. Stephen & Sons for T.C. Engels & Co. in Antwerp. It measured 320.3 x 36 x 24.6 and is listed with 2328 tons. Kapitänsbild Reimers

Heinrich Reimers (German, 1824-1895) - Ship Portrait of the German Steamer *Anton von Kiel - Capt. E. Aereboe* at sea off Hong Kong 1890 - the steamer is shown in the Chinese Sea with two junks in the background - Oil on canvas on original stretcher, 53 by 77 cm (21 by 30 inch), with frame 65 x 88 cm (25 1/2 by 34 1/2 inch) - signed "Heinrich Reimers", dated 1890 and inscribed with title as shown above - cleaned, smaller areas with repair / retouch only, in good condition, original frame - The Oporto Collection

Note: Reimers was a Captain and Pilot himself and worked in Kiel as a ship portrait artist. The steamer "Anton" was owned by the shipping company "Sartori & Berger" in Kiel and was obviously used for coastal trade in Far East. China Trade Artist in Hong Kong - China Trade Ship Portrait of the Danish Steamer "Olaf" off Hongkong, ca. 1886, Oil on canvas 36 x 56 cm (14 1/8 x 22 "), good condition, not relined, 20th century stretcher and frame, slight inpaint only

Note: A typical China Trade ship portrait with great detail and in good condition. Provenance: previously in the collection of Mr. L. Thomsen in Denmark. Note: The Screwsteamer "Cheribon" was built 1882 in Dumbarton, Scotland by W. Penny & Bros. for the Cie Nationale de Nav. in Marseilles. It measured 339.8 x 40.3 x 28.8 and is listed with 3056 tons. Note: This is a typical and early large size work by the artist with a slight "on-Deck" view of the vessel. The captain and other the seaman are shown on board. The "L.P. Holmblad" was most likely named after the famous Dragor industrialist Lauritz Peter Holmblad, who had a manufacturing fabric in Amager, Denmark.
