Pirate Napoleonic Warse

Jens Iversen (1788-1855) attr. - Ship Portrait of the Privateer (Pirate) *Juliane Sophie of Copenhagen* chased by the British Brigg *Musqwetto* 1809 - the sloop is shown with three captured ships attacked by the Royal Navy Brigg off an Island - Gouache and Watercolor on paper, heightened with white, 22 by 36 cm (8 5/8 by 14 inch), with frame 47 x 56 cm (18 1/2 by 22 inch) - extensively inscribed with title (see below) and dated 1809 - tanned paper and ago signs otherwise ok - recent mounting and frame - Private Collection, Denmark

Note: The full inscription reads as following: "Privateren Juliane Sophie af Kiöbenhavn forfulgt med 3-de Priser af de engelske Slop of War Brig Musqwetto den 12. May 1809" - From the inscription and style we suppose this picture has been done by Jens Iversen (1788-1855), but there were several other artists active in this period. Note: Johnson often executed commissions by the Captains of smaller vessels, which were in wide use in Scandinavia during the period. We know by him several portraits of one masted Northern (Cargo) Yachts and this Topsail Schooner represents therefore already the typical "medium size" sailing craft used in the area and period. Charles Shlee Ship Portrait

Charles Slee (Shlee) - Portrait of the British Brig *Thomas Chalmers commanded by James Duncan of Dundee* - the vessel is shown entering Riga under full sail - watercolor, pen and ink on stretched canvas - signed l/c "From Charles Shlee Ship Drawer at Riga 1850" and inscribed with title to scale - 51 x 66 cm (20 x 26 inch) - in the original birdeye`s maple veneered frame - North American Collection

Note: The wooden 197 ton Brig *Thomas Chalmers* was built in St Martins, New Brunswick, Canada in 1847 and registered at St John, New Brunswick on June 26th, 1847. It was sold to James Duncan of Dundee, Scotland and registered at Dundee in 1847. Pictures by this Riga based artist are quite rare and this is a nice example of his work. Edvard Skari painting

Edvard Skari - Shipping in the Oresund, Kronborg Castle beyond, ca. late 1870s or early 1880s, a full-rigged Ship is passing the Oresund and taking a pilot, many other sailing vessels in the background - signed lower right - Oil on canvas 60 x 95 cm (24 by 37 1/2 inch) without the frame - good condition (not relined, a few areas of repairs and inpaint, mainly in the sky) - Property of a European Collection

Note: The artist painted some versions with this motif. Another, larger example (80 by 126 cm and dated 1878) is in the Collection of the Norges Rederiforbund (described and illustrated under Nr. 22 in "Norsk Maritim Malerkunst" and in the Art Maritim Catalogue 2000) and the Norsk Sjofartsmuseum has as well a similar painting by Skari in their "Gram-Salen" on permanent exhibition. Scandinavian artist (19th C.) - Large Oilpainting with Shipping off Kronborg Castle, Elsinore ca. 1880 - a full-rigged sailing vessel passing the Castle (the ship can be identified by signal flags), other vessels in the background, signed lower left with monogram H.St., Oil on canvas, - 62 x 95 cm (24 1/2 x 37 1/2 in.) and with the frame 79 x 110 cm (31 x 43 1/4 in.), cleaned and in good condition, gilted period frame - onboard Cruiseship Nautica, Miami, Florida

Note: The "Hamlet" castle in the background is shown in good details, also the harbour or Elsinore is visible and a Dutch or German sailing vessel is lying in its entrance. The style of the painting remembers of the Eckersberg school from the Golden Age of Danish Art, although it is painted later. Click here or on the image to see larger illustrations.

Jorgen Dahl (1825-1890) - Ship Portrait of the Danish steamer *Kobenhavn* under sail and steam off Skagen lighthouse 1883 - the transition steamer is shown at good wether off the Skagen light ship and light house - Oil on canvas, 60 by 90 cm (24 by 36 inch), with frame 75 x 105 cm - signed and dated lower left "J. Dahl 1883" & inscribed on the bow with the ship`s name - good condition, original frame - The Baltic Sea Collection

Note: An impressive portrait of the large, threemasted steamship with an interesting background (Skagen is the place where the Northern Sea / Atlantic meets the Baltic Sea). This painting furthermore convinces with a realistic water, a detailled execution of the ship and interesting contrasts and colors in the sky (with a romantic touch). Schiffswerft

Scandinavian artist - Large Oilpainting of Troense Shipyard in the Svendborg-Sund, 1885, showing also a portrait of the sailing vessel "Anna", several men working on the right side at a hulk of a wooden sailing vessel, romantic early evening impression, on the left side another shipyard place, signed lower left with monogram E.G., Oil on canvas - 73 x 107 cm (28 3/4 x 42 inch) and with the frame 84 x 117 cm (33 x 46 inch), slight crackle, repair and inpaint in few places, cleaned and otherwise in good condition, gilted period frame - Private Collection, Halifax, NS (Canada)

Note: Shipyards were in general only rarely painted. And although the style of this painting is a little naive - this is an historical document of the period of the wooden sailing vessels.
