Heinrich Petersen - Ship Portrait of the Canadian Brigantine " G Wheel Wright" from Nova Scotia, painted ca. 1865 - the vessel under slightly reduced sails at sea, a second view of the ship can be seen in the left background – signed "H. Petersen" - Oil on canvas - 47 x 65 cm (18 1/2 x 25 1/2 in.) – North American Collection

Note: The wooden brigantine *G Wheel Wright* was built in 1862 in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, Canada and measured 229 tons. The vessel was used for the Trans-Atlantic trade to Europe and for other routes. As usual with Heinrich Petersen this painting is from quality and execution really convincing. Note: Das erste Schiff des Hamburger Reeders Eduard Beatus Crasemann, die *Carlota*, wurde in Neuhof bei Hamburg von Ernst Dreyer erbaut. Kapitän T.S. Groot aus Westerland / Sylt führte den Segler 1859-62 nach Melbourne und Liverpool, 1862-63 nach Islay / Peru, Callao und Rotterdam. Die letzte Reise ging 1863 nach Singapur, Hong Kong und Akyab. In Hamburg zurück wurde die Bark am 19.9.1865 an Reeder Kirch in Altona verkauft. Die Nachkommen des Kapitäns T.S. Groot aus Keitum / Sylt veräußerten das auf dem Dachboden lagernde Gemälde 1975. Note: This painting with the romantic atmosphere is a typical and well executed work from his Oeuvre with interesting sunset light effects on the water and on the starboard side of the Brig. It is possible that it shows an incident from the Danish-Prussian War in 1864, when the Danish forces fighted in the Northern Sea against the Prussian-Austrian fleet. Note: An early and very well done work by the famous French ship portrait artist with a romantic early evening impression. Paintings with a quality like this one were the reason why Adam Senior has been elected as official marine painter for the French government and why he is represented in the Musee de la Marine in Paris with a permanent exhibition. Holmblad" with auxilliary sails set at sea heading for Antwerp 1894, the vessel is shown on a calm sea with a sailing ship in the background - signed and dated "H. Mohrmann 1894" lower left - Oil on canvas - 60 x 100 cm (24 x 39 in) - good condition, not relined - in the original veneered wooden frame and on the original stretcher - Private Collection

Note: This is a typical and early large size work by the artist with a slight "on-Deck" view of the vessel. The captain and other the seaman are shown on board. The "L.P. Holmblad" was most likely named after the famous Dragor industrialist Lauritz Peter Holmblad, who had a manufacturing fabric in Amager, Denmark. Kapitänsbild Reimers

Heinrich Reimers (German, 1824-1895) - Ship Portrait of the German Steamer *Anton von Kiel - Capt. E. Aereboe* at sea off Hong Kong 1890 - the steamer is shown in the Chinese Sea with two junks in the background - Oil on canvas on original stretcher, 53 by 77 cm (21 by 30 inch), with frame 65 x 88 cm (25 1/2 by 34 1/2 inch) - signed "Heinrich Reimers", dated 1890 and inscribed with title as shown above - cleaned, smaller areas with repair / retouch only, in good condition, original frame - The Oporto Collection

Note: Reimers was a Captain and Pilot himself and worked in Kiel as a ship portrait artist. The steamer "Anton" was owned by the shipping company "Sartori & Berger" in Kiel and was obviously used for coastal trade in Far East. Note: The *Bruno & Marie* was built in 1861-62 in Altona by Dolck for the shipping company Schön, who sold the vessel in 1876 to the shipping company Willink & Co. in Hamburg. The Captains were 1876-77 C. Böge and 1877-80 E. H. A. Volkertsen of Langeness.

Mohrmann painting

John Henry Mohrmann (1857-1916) - Ship Portrait of the German four-masted Bark "NAL" 1906 - the vessel under full sail on the open sea - signed and dated 1910 - Oil on canvas, 60 by 100 cm (23 5/8 by 39 1/2 inch) - good condition, professionally cleaned and restored - Private Collection, Europe - Click here or on the image to see a larger illustration.

Note: The "Nal" was built in 1892 by Grangemouth Dockyard Co. in Alloa for J. Herron and Co. in Liverpool and originally named "Lord Ripon". In 1898 it was sold to the Rhederei Visurgis AG in Bremen and renamed "Nal". Finally in 1921 it was sold again to Danzig and sunk in January 1922 off Barnflet Island (near Cape Horn) in a gale. The "Nal" was mainly used for long distance transports, eg. to Chile, New Caledonia and the Delaware Bay.
