China Trade Portrait, ca. 1880 - a blond American girl is portrayed in front of a Chinese Chair, Oilpainting on board, 16 1/2 by 22 1/2 in. (42 x 57 cm) and with the frame 21 1/2 by 27 1/4 in. (55 x 69 cm) - Condition: usual craquelure all over the surface, under UV lamp visible is slight repainting (only in a few areas, mainly at the legs of the girl), slight loss of paint at the margins (where it is framed), otherwise ok, this painting is in a period frame, which is likely the original frame - Price (incl. s&h in Europe): EUR 980 (convert to your currency)

Note: This painting has been commissioned by a New England seafarer who visited the Far East with his ship and was likely based on a daguerreotype of his daughter. Chinese Export art portraits of children are comparable rare, since in most cases portraits of adult persons have been executed by these artists. China Trade Portrait, late 19th Century - Oilpainting on canvas of a Lady with blue eyes and brown hair - 17 1/4 by 23 1/2 in. (44 x 60cm) - framed 24 1/4 by 30 in. (62 x 76cm) - Original (as found) condition, not relined, no retouching or repair visible under UV light. Craquelure throughout (as can be found on many/most China Trade paintings). One slight tear in lower left corner, canvas uneven (folds) near upper margins, one small loss of paint or hole in the background left of the hair, in a period gold frame. - price on request

Note: Typical China Trade Portrait of a young Lady from New England, most likely the wife of a Sea Captain or Mate who visited Kanton, Shanghai, Hong Kong or one of the other ports in China - said to be the mother of the girl shown above. Provenance: Private Collection in Massachusetts
