The wooden Thames Sailing Barges were a widely used type of vessel in the second half of the 19th Century in England. They were solid built and could carry about 140 tons of cargo. They were only rarely depicted as ship portraits where the name of the ship has been stated - as we learn from the book "The Pierhead Painters" by Roger Finch. Anyway this painting has of cause not been done by one of the typical ship portrait artists (pierhead painters) but by a Marine Artist, who exhibited his works at the leading exhibition in Great Britain (The Royal Academy) and other places where fine Marine Art were shown. This spring or summer scene with the green hills of Gravesend shows a view from the other side of the Thames (Tilbury, Essex) and is considered to be of special interest for art lovers either in Tilbury, Gravesend or London where the artist were living. Paintings by this artist can be found in many British Collections, but also in the United States of America, Canada and Australia.

The prices for larger Oil paintings by Miles range in British and Irish Galleries from Pounds 3000 to 9000 (or EUR 4500 to 13500) and worldwide (USA etc.) between US$ 5,000 and 15,000. The trend of prices, especially in British or Irish Auctions is quite positive in the last 10 years. Please note, that this painting is not a work of less interest (with a rowing boat only or a coastal scene without shipping) but a painting which would be around Pounds 5,000 or more in a UK Gallery. With our sale price we pass on to the buyer our favorable buying price for this Quality British Marine Painting. The best viewing distance for this painting is about 8 to 10 feet and this is not a painting for a small room - but good for a living room or office or onboard of a larger yacht / cruise ship.
