Notes:
Anton Melbye is the oldest of the three Melbye brothers (the others were Vilhelm and Fritz) and a well known marine artist. He preferred a realistic style, often also with romantic or dramatic scenes. Anton Melbye travelled extensively in the Northern Sea and Baltic Sea, to Marocco, Stockholm, Italy and to Konstantinopel. He exhibited from 1840 on at the Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, from 1847 on in the Salon of Paris, 1862 in London and in Hamburg, in Berlin at the Academy and in Brussels. There appeared already fakes of his paintings or works by other artists which signed also with the initials "A.M.".

Romantic Coastal Scene with two Sailors in the foreground and a Ship beyond 1843, some seagulls are flying over the rocks and the water, signed "A. Melbye" and dated, Oil on canvas, 50 x 63 cm, the possession of a Private Collection in Hamburg, Germany

Note: Typical for the early works by Anton Melbye is the very realistic style influenced by the Eckersberg School and the Golden Age painters in Denmark. Later his works were executed less detailled. Image of Melbye Painting

"Shipping off a coastline" 1868, several sailing vessels and one transition steamer off a coastline, probably the English coast - fully signed and dated "Anton Melbye 1868" lower left - Oilpainting on canvas - 17 by 23 1/4 inch. (43 x 59 cm) - in a period frame, good condition (not relined, slight overcleaning) - Private European Collection
-
Note: This is a typical example of a later work by Anton Melbye when he was influenced already by the School of Barbizon in Paris and used a different brush. He painted the water in a quite detailled, but more "impressionistic" way than in his earlier works and created with the ships a really realistic atmosphere of a shipping scene in the Northern Sea.
