Arenhold was first an marine officer and travelled as far as China and South America. After 1881 he studied in Hamburg at Heinrich Leitner and Franz Hunten and in Berlin at Hans F. Gude. He was himself a passionate yacht sailor and member of the imperial yachtclub in Kiel. Mostly he depicted German warships (also historical motifs from the 16th Century) in his paintings, but we will find also a few seascapes and pictures with merchant sailing vessels as well as coastal scenes in his Ouevre. He exhibited his works from 1888 on in Germany and Austria and received a gold medal in 1896 at the Kiel exhibition. Today he is represented in several Museums in Northern Germany and occasionally in local Private Collections, but the demand for his works on the art market is rather low which has an influence on the prices also. |
