Ship Portrait of the *M.Y. "Happy Days" N.Y.Y.C.* ca. 1920 – The American Steam Yacht at calm sea in the Bay of Naples with Vesuvius beyond – Gouache – 40 x 70 cm (15 3/4 x 27 1/2 in.) – signed "L. Papaluca" l.r. and inscribed with title in the center section at the bottom – outstanding original condition (very slight foldes on the left side), in the period frame - Private Collection in New Hampshire, USA

Bartels 1871, the vessel of Cranz / Amts Jork is shown off Venice, Marcus Square – Watercolor – 33 x 52 cm (13 x 20 1/2 in.) – not signed but attributed to a member of the Luzzo family (possibly Giovanni) , inscribed with title lower right – The Werder Collection

Note: The *Anna* was built in 1859 and under the command of Capt. Bartels. It had 94 tons and 5 men crew. A chronometer was not on board (which made navigation not easier!). Note: The *Mercur* was built in 1864 in Neustadt by J. Tornoe for the shipping company G. Jaede using a wooden construction with brass and iron bolts, no sheat metal. Renault, Leghorn" and inscribed with title - 52 x 67 cm (20 1/2 x 26 3/8 in.) – The Werder Collection, Germany

Note: The Schooner *Otto* was built on the shipyard Otto Dolck in Altona for Hans Lange sen. in the year 1847. It had 123 GRT and could be identified by the ensign " Z 92". Giovanni Luzzo (Italian, fl. 1851-77) - Ship Portrait of the German Schoonerbrig CATHARINA Capt. H. Dreier 1869 - inscribed with title: "Unter der Küste von Norwegen am 22ten März 1869 Schiff Catharina Capt. H.Dreier" - the vessel of Blankenese under reduced sails off the Norwegian coast – Watercolor – 41 x 61 cm (16 x 24 in.) – signed "Gio Luzzo Venice" and dated – The Werder Collection - Click on the image to see a larger photo

Note: The Catharina (168 GRT) was built on the shipyard of D.W.Kremer in Elmshorn for Thies Breckwoldt and Heinrich Dreyer in 1865. It was flying the flag "Z 102" or signal "LDVK". The captains Thies Breckwoldt, Heinrich Dreyer, Johs. Kröger and Johs. Bohn were in command. On the 2nd of November 1878 the Catharina left Antwerp and was bound for Rio Grande do Sul. It was Johs. Bohns first and only voyage on the Catharina. It is believed that the vessel sank in stormy seas between the 8th and 11th of November, some debris was washed ashore on the French coast near Ploumanache. Six members of the crew died at sea.

Dirks 1858 – The merchant yacht under full sail at sea with a harbor and a three-masted sailing vessel in the background - Watercolor – 50 x 64 cm (20 x 25 in.) – signed "J. Spinn", indistinctly dated "1858" (?) and later inscribed by a different hand "Erbaut Januar 1855, verunglückt April 1859" – The Werder Collection Germany

Note: The inscription tells us, that the yacht from Lower Saxony (British Falg with a horse in the center) was built in Januar 1855 and lost in April 1859. Click on the image to enlarge the picture. Photo Copyright of the image is with the Werder Collection.
